Forester

John and his wife Roz own 8-acres of land on Mauna Kea on the Big Island, on which they have developed a native Hawaiian forest with over 1,000 Koa and many other native species. John was featured in Hawaiian Airlines Magazine, Hana Hou, in an article titled Teach a Person to Forest. John visits the Big Island regularly to plant more trees and fight invasive plants.

John also owns and operates the Adopt A Koa Tree program which allows people to have koa trees planted for their loved ones for special occasions like memorials and new babies.

John & Roz previously owned and operated Ahu Lani Sanctuary, a retreat center on the Big Island next to their 8-acres of native Hawaiian forest.

John has been President of the World Turtle Trust for many years. The WTT, founded in 1992, works to fund sea turtle conservation efforts worldwide. Currently WTT is assisting in funding the Hawksbill Preservation Program on the Big Island and leatherback turtle conservation efforts by the Leatherback Trust and other conservation organizations.

Coconut Rhinoseros Beetle

John learned about Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) in the Spring of 2025 and decided to do his part to battle the beetle starting on his home turf, Lanikai. He is currently sounding the alarm with a postcard mailout to all Lanikai residents, and the development of an informational website SaveLanikai.com to help Lanikai beat the beetle. His goal is to keep Lanikai CRB free.

John Paddler

John began paddling with Lanikai Canoe Club in 2011. A few years later he started paddling with Na Koa Lani, off the Kaneohe Marine Base where he still paddles today. He also occasionally swims to the Mokes, and can be found in UFC gym several times a week.

John has worked on the software for the Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer on NASA's Galileo probe. He holds a Masters Degree in Information and Computer Science from UH. He has developed sophisticated e-commerce systems for his businesses, and is actively utilizing AI in nearly all his endeavors.

John and his wife Roz pioneered selling Hawaii travel products on the Internet starting in the late 1990's, utilizing (at the time) cutting edge online booking systems developed by John. Their most successful endeavor was Travel Hawaii which sold hotel stays, airtickets, activities, etc. Due to changing markets Travel Hawaii sells only car rentals today.
